The desert plays by its own rules — scorching by day, surprisingly cold by night, and dusty year-round. A little planning goes a long way toward making your camel safari or overnight camp genuinely comfortable rather than something to just get through. Here's what we recommend packing.
Clothing
Stick to lightweight, breathable cotton for daytime — long sleeves and full-length pants actually keep you cooler than shorts by protecting skin from direct sun and blowing sand. Pack at least one warm layer (a light jacket or hoodie) for the evening, since desert temperatures drop sharply after sunset, even in warmer months. A scarf or stole is genuinely useful too, both for sun protection and for windy, sandy stretches during jeep or camel rides.
Footwear
Comfortable, closed walking shoes or sturdy sandals are best for dune walks and camp exploring. Avoid breaking in brand-new shoes on this trip. Flip-flops are handy for relaxing around camp in the evening, and socks that keep sand out make a noticeable difference on longer walks.
Sun & Skin Protection
The desert sun is stronger than it feels, especially with sand reflecting light back up at you. Pack a high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat or cap, and a good lip balm — the dry desert air can chap lips fast. A basic moisturizer is worth having too, particularly if you're prone to dry skin.
Electronics & Photography
You'll want your camera or phone charged for sunset and stargazing shots — bring a fully charged power bank, since charging points at desert camps can be limited. A dust-protective pouch or case for your camera is a smart addition given how fine desert sand can get into everything. A small headlamp or torch is also genuinely useful for moving around camp after dark.
Health & Comfort Essentials
Carry a reusable water bottle and stay ahead of dehydration, especially in warmer months. Pack any personal medication you take regularly, along with basic motion-sickness tablets if you're prone to it (camel and jeep rides can trigger it for some travelers). Wet wipes and hand sanitizer are handy given the limited washing facilities at some camps.
What Not to Bring
Leave the heavy suitcase behind if you can — desert camps generally have limited storage space, so a smaller bag or backpack is much more practical. Skip flashy or valuable jewelry, and think twice about bringing anything you'd be upset to see covered in dust by the end of the trip.
